The island shattered, and much of it collapsed beneath the sea, leaving a sunken crater. The child of Krakatoa is reborn

The story did not close. In 1927, a new volcanic island began rising from the sea at nearly the same spot, named Anak Krakatau, meaning 'Child of Krakatoa'. This young island still grows and erupts from time to time, and in 2018 a flank collapse triggered another deadly tsunami — a harsh reminder that the power beneath the Sunda Strait has not gone quiet.
