Imagine standing in a place where everything you thought contradictory blends into one: the ground beneath you sits below sea level, the air around you feels hot enough to soften iron, and before you stretch pools shimmering in yellow, green and orange, as if painted by a hand that never learned moderation. You are not on another planet — you are in north-east Ethiopia, in one of the strangest, harshest and yet most beautiful corners of the Earth: the Danakil Depression.

The truth is that this place resembles nothing we are used to. It lies in what geologists call the Afar Triangle, a low region spread across Ethiopia, Eritrea and Djibouti. Some of its points sink to about a hundred metres below sea level, making it one of the lowest spots on all dry land. Because it is so sunken, ringed by mountains that trap the air, and almost never touched by rain, it has become one of the hottest inhabited places year-round: annual temperatures hover around 34–35°C and climb in summer to near 50°C. Why does this depression exist at all?

To understand Danakil, we must look beneath our feet rather than around us. The Earth is not a solid, silent rock but a broken crust of vast plates drifting slowly over a pliable mantle. In the Afar region something rare happens that scarcely repeats anywhere else on land: three great rifts meet at a single point — the Red Sea rift from the north, the Gulf of Aden rift from the east, and the great East African Rift stretching south. At this junction the plates pull away from one another in different directions, stretching the crust and thinning it until it nearly tears.

Here lies the secret of the place: we stand over a widening crack. The African continent is slowly splitting into two, and the Danakil Depression is the open wound of that rupture. The rocks sink because the crust is stretched and thinned from both sides, and magma near the surface heats everything above it. What we see today as cracked, dry ground will, in millions of years, become the floor of a new ocean separating the Horn of Africa from the rest of the continent — just as the Red Sea was born before it. We are not looking at land that is dying, but at a sea being born, slowly.

Dallol: colours you can hardly believe

The most famous part of Danakil is a small patch called Dallol. See its photos without explanation and you would swear they were digitally edited. Vivid sulphur yellow, toxic green, rusty orange and salt white all swirl together in small circular pools breathing steam. Behind the beauty is a violent chemistry: superheated groundwater rises through layers of salt and sulphur, dissolving minerals on the way. Sulphur lends the yellows and greens, iron oxides the reds and oranges, and potassium salts leave white and yellow crusts crystallising at the edges.

What makes the scene stranger still is that many of these pools are astonishingly acidic — some approach the acidity of the strongest acids, and their heat exceeds what most living things can bear. Yet Dallol remains one of the most active hydrothermal fields on Earth, its pools reshaping from month to month; what you see today may vanish tomorrow, replaced by a new vent.

An open laboratory for life — and its limits

Let me tell you why scientists care about this place beyond being captivated by its looks. Danakil gathers in a single spot everything biologists consider impossible: very high heat, extreme salinity, severe acidity and a scarcity of usable water. And yet, in some of its environments, tiny 'extremophile' microbes have been found living where no cell should. Studying them helps us understand how life may have begun on a young Earth far harsher than today's, and how life — if it exists — might look on worlds like Mars, which once had salty waters running across it before it dried out.

But Danakil teaches an opposite lesson too. In a striking 2019 study, researchers examined some of Dallol's most acidic, salty and hot pools and found no genuine microbial life in them at all. In other words, there is a limit life cannot cross however it adapts — a point where the harsh factors combine and shut the door completely. That in itself is a precious discovery: knowing where life stops matters no less than knowing where it thrives.

People, salt and caravans

Amid all this extremity runs a human story centuries old. The Afar people who live at the edges of the depression turned its cruelty into a livelihood: ancient lakes dry up and leave behind thick slabs of salt, cut by hand and loaded onto camels in caravans crossing the blazing plain. This salt — known locally as 'amole' — was once used almost like currency, traded in the markets of the Ethiopian highlands. To watch a camel caravan walk in a long line over white ground under a merciless sun is to be reminded that humans learned to live even at the margin of the impossible.

A volcano that never sleeps

Some distance from Dallol stands Erta Ale, one of the rarest volcanoes in the world. Most volcanoes erupt then rest for years or centuries; this one holds in its crater a 'lava lake' that has stayed molten and glowing almost continuously for decades. Local people call it the 'smoking mountain', and it is a rare window through which we look straight at the heat of the Earth's interior without digging. Standing on its rim at night, watching the lava breathe, crack and heal, you realise that the ground we walk on so calmly is only a thin crust over an ocean of fire.

In the end, what makes the Danakil Depression astonishing is not that it is the harshest or the hottest, but that it reveals the Earth 'at work' before our eyes. We are used to seeing mountains and seas as fixed and eternal, when in truth they are in constant, slow motion we can barely glimpse in a human lifetime. Danakil compresses millions of years into a single scene: a continent splitting, an ocean being born, and life wrestling with its own limits. Perhaps that is the deeper lesson — that the harshest places may be the most honest about how our planet truly works.
