The classic analogy is a highway. Bandwidth is the number of lanes: more lanes means more cars pass at once — that's data per second. Latency is how long a single car takes to travel end to end — measured in milliseconds (ms) and often called 'ping.'

Why they are independent
You can have a very wide road (high bandwidth) that is also very long (high latency), or a narrow, short one. Satellite internet, for example, can offer decent bandwidth but high latency because the signal travels all the way to space and back.
